Yesterday, my beloved netbook died. I got lucky and saw the crash coming, and have basically spent the last 24 hours frantically trying to salvage all the business stuff on it. The good news is that with lots of work I have: my client files are safe, my business files are safe, and my pagefour files are safe. This is a major victory. However, I’m pretty sure my computer is done for, so I’m in that mourning stage for an electronic that you really love. My problem is now this: do I buy the same model of netbook that I loved, or spend a couple months saving and upgrade to a macbook pro of some sort? Leave a comment if you have an opinion or some advice: I could really use it right now!
In addition, the teleclass is tomorrow, and will cover all of the little parts of marketing writing that we don’t usually think about. I’m going to talk about twitter bios and other things like that, but if there is something that you would like covered, or a question that I didn’t get to yet in the series, please shoot me an email so I know to add to my plans.
I am now off to drink lots of coffee, mourn my computer, and catch up on all the client work that didn’t happen yesterday.

Oh, No! Booo Hooo. I am so sorry for your loss.
Been there. Glad you saved the important stuff. Good luck getting a replacement, which ever way you decide to go.

Well based on your answers, I think it could be:
-Spyware (Most are just annoying yet they can screw with your computer)
- A corrupted Operating System (Which can mess with software & internet service, and possibly caused by spyware)
First,
–Check to see if you can restore your computer to a previous date. The most recent date before last week should work. Don’t worry the restore is reversible if it doesn’t work.
Last resort (Only if you have restore disc(s) for your computer & all the original software and the operating system disc w/key) If you do have all of these things, unfortunately, you may need to:
–Format your hard drive and start over (You can do this with the Operating System Disc)
If the above doesn’t work, then it really depends on how much you really need your netbook right now. If its essential then, get another one. If you can do without for awhile then save up and upgrade.
I hope this is helpful to you (Too bad I can remotely try to fix it for you),

You’re awesome. I have unfortunately tried most of those! I haven’t downloaded anything new in the last week or so (other than client emails/docs) either, so I have no idea how something like this would have happened. In fairness, I do use the thing fourteen hours every day, so it may have just finally worn out. I will try the restore solution today and see what happens and get back to you!
What do you use? Any advice on a very portable laptop?

This same thing just happened to me about a week ago with my Toshiba netbook. Unfortunately, it was the third computer that has died on me in the past year. The good news is that this time I’d been running Norton’s security system which I bought because I thought the last two computers died because of spyware…..but which also came with online backup service. So, my computer was under warranty, but I ran out and bought a cheap tower to tide me over and then I was able to work with the Norton tech people to download everything that had been backed up, so I didn’t lose a thing.
The other thing I did…..I finally bought an Apple desktop. I’d been putting it off because I didn’t want to spend the money….and then I figured out that in the past year what I’d spent on netbooks and laptops that died, equaled the cost of that Apple desktop…..and it’s got a 27 inche screen, whooo hooo! (Of course, it’s still in the box, I haven’t had the time to make the transfer yet!)

I’ve been a staunch Mac users for 20 years and swear by them. Okay, let’s hope I haven’t just cursed my machines!
They’re pretty robust and have served me well. The only time they let me down were when I’ve dropped them in carparks and not survived the bounch :=)
The MacBookPro 15″ is very heavy to cart around but I survive. I guess an MacBook Air would be nice and light but only as a second machine for keynoting or visiting clients.
My current set up is an iMac 24″ and a MacBookPro 15″ (my preferred machine to work on) + an iPhone for keeping up with clients on the road.
My favourite writing tools are Scrivener, TextMate and Pages. Oh, and YoJimbo and Tinderbox for organising my ideas.
