Friday Roundup: Marketing, Shakespeare, and Mascot Troubles

by hollyj on May 21, 2010

Laura has made an executive decision to move the roundup post to Friday, so here it is! We’ve got a bunch of news this week, so without further ado, let’s get started!

Item One: On Products People Want

Naomi, as usual, writes a great blog this week about marketing things that people actually want to buy. Especially if you only have 83 blog readers.

Item Two: On Such Tweet Sorrow

I’ve talked about this project on Twitter before, but I wanted to mention it here because I haven’t seen a review of the entire thing yet. Such Tweet Sorrow was a joint project between the RSC and Mudlark; they did an updated Romeo and Juliet over the course of five weeks on Twitter with a series of linked Twitter accounts. I followed the whole thing pretty closely, and was really impressed with how well the whole thing was done. You can now check out the entire tweet stream from all five weeks on the site.

I loved the project, but I ultimately felt like there were many more possibilities that might help it make the social media jump. There were some interesting reactions on Twitter; some people felt that the long death scenes didn’t work as tweets, for instance. I’d love to see this project continue with a comedy; Shakespeare as a workplace sex comedy would work well on a platform like Twitter. With me and Laura as writers, preferably, because it seems like the writers have a really fun job.

Item Three: On Injured Mascots

On Monday, poor Riceball hurt his paw! He came limping up to the bed early in the morning. :( For a strictly indoor cat, we have no idea how he managed that one. Here’s a picture of him sleeping in the bed for most of the day. Thankfully, he was all better by the middle of the week.

Item Four: On Facebook Fanpages

Cottage Copy now has a Facebook page! Yes, after much hemming and hawing, we are now on Facebook. It’s bare minimum right now, but we’re working to cultivate it into a mini special place where Cottage Copy readers can hang out with each other, and us!

Item Five: On Awesome Auctions

The Do the Write Thing for Nashville Auction is now officially at its end. We don’t know how much money was raised, but for all book lovers and aspiring authors out there, this was definitely a win-win for all. The money from the auction will help the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee provide disaster response funds for the Nashville flood victims.

Item Six: On Finding Your Zen Moment

And last but not least, with all the excitement with the merger going on this week, Laura’s anxiety level skyrocketed very high. She was so excited, she couldn’t find a way to calm down! If you ever have this problem, and find one day that all legal ways of calming yourself down just don’t work (tea, running, gym exercise, meditation, wine, breathing into a paper bag), try going to a massage therapist. Yes, Laura really did go, and yes, the nudie thing can be uncomfortable. Especially if it’s your first time. But trust us, it does wonders to your stress level. :) And it feels good to be pampered. As small business owners, we sometimes forget to reward ourselves.

Well, that’s it for the roundup! Remember, we still have our standard website package on sale. Email or tweet us if you’re interested. Before we run out!
