In Which Didy Receives Swag, and Holly Teaches a Marketing Lesson In a Biker Shirt

For full FCC disclosure, Karen did send me the stuff I talk about today as a gift. And then told me I could complain about it if I wanted, so I wouldn’t worry much.

Today we’re going to talk about two things: marketing, and dog stuff.  These don’t intersect the way you think they do, I promise.
So the background of the story is this. About a month ago, Karen won a contest from me. As a thank you, she offered to send me a beaded collar for Didy that she had made. Now, this was sort of a big deal, because this wasn’t something I would have bought for Didy myself. I’ve always been sort of weirded out by beaded dog collars; they look uncomfortable, and I figured they would break really easily. Or that he would hate it, because he’s sort of picky about the things that I put on him. As you can see from the pictures below, he really seems to like his new fancy stuff!
So Karen and I met on Skype to discuss the copy consultation, and somewhere during the discussion I brought up the failed harness that I had bought for Didy. Like most hunting type dogs, he pulls like crazy on a leash, and I’ve been working on getting him to stop for months. My solution before had been a body harness that didn’t work, and made him look like he was about to parachute into a war zone. Her response to my complaints?
“Oh, I can send you a leash that will fix that.”
And here’s the real lesson of this post (beyond the fact that Karen makes awesome dog products). I have lots of clients who worry about marketing because their products or services don’t solve any “major” problems. I think that sometimes people worry that if they aren’t making their clients rich, curing cancer, or creating world peace, that they don’t really have a product that will sell.
Sometimes the most marketable problems are the little ones, as this story illustrates. I would have happily bought that leash from Karen because she presented it as more than just a leash; it was a solution to a nagging problem that had plagued me for six months. Even better, it is a quality product that works. If you want to make real money, this is how you do it.
I hope everyone is having a great start to the week, and we’ll see you Wednesday with another post!
